The point of this blog is to share my thoughts about what it means to be a living an outdoor life. A "gumby" is an beginner climber.

Yes, I have come back from the depths
In my last post about climbing and life post surgery, I noted my mental and physical state. The dark time lasted from my surgery until the fall of 2018. Nearly 2 years of struggling to get fit. I officially retired in the spring of 2017. Since then, I have worked for myself as a Private Investigator, taking cases that interest me. As time has gone by, very few cases interest me.
What does interest me is my family and my own personal development. I've tried to learn a new language, worked on many projects at my home and have started running again. The photo above was taken at the 2019 Oakland Half Marathon. I finished 2nd in my age group (60 & over) with a time of 1:34, just 6 minutes slower than my time at age 53, 1:28.
I've run in other races, done some climbing and am running in a marathon in December, with the goal of qualifying for Boston for the 4th time. I may not run in Boston, but, qualifying would be very satisfying.
Being able to run on a regular basis has been very good for my mental health. I was able to think while on a run and concluded that it would be good for my health to stop watching the news shows and to read the New York Times and most important of all to stop discussing politics with all but my most trusted friend. I'm able to value my remaining time on earth with my family and close friends. Being able to love the views from the mountains or while hiking along the ocean with my wife is cause for happiness and contentment. Yes, I had come back.
